Mobiles one of many distractions faced by drivers
AMTA has contested media claims this week that illegal mobile phone use while driving is at epidemic levels. The mobile phone industry says mobile phones are only one of the distractions faced by drivers, and other tasks have been found to be more distracting. AMTA Chief Executive Officer, Chris Althaus, told the ABC in New South Wales and the Newcastle Herald that the mobile phone industry takes very seriously the issue of mobile phone use while driving.

This week Foxtel CEO Kim Williams used his NPC address to urge Government action on broadcasting legislation reform, timely release of digital dividend spectrum and the future development of Australia?s digital economy. The delaying tactics of the broadcasting sector in seeking to protect their over-mature business model from the relentless onset of the digital age is a central theme. Williams also highlights a role for the Productivity Commission as part of a suggested acceleration of the reform agenda.
Mobile safety and fertility
Contrary to recent claims there is no substantiated scientific evidence that mobile phones affect fertility, AMTA told the Hobart Mercury newspaper this week.

CNN reports that cell phone technology is helping developing nations prepare for disease threats such as a new strain of swine flu, an outbreak of measles or the increased spread of HIV.

A competitive selection process for digital education, health and emergency services in regional, rural and remote Australia will commence in the second half of 2009.
