The mobile telecommunications industry noted this week’s Federal Government announcement about ISP filtering to combat specific content that has been refused classification (RC), saying the industry was committed to being socially responsible and in step with community needs and expectations.
The Chief Executive Officer of the Australian Mobile Telecommunications Association (AMTA), Chris Althaus, said a safe online experience was a key aim regardless of how content was delivered using fixed or mobile technologies.
He said the mobile sector understood that the filtering measures would include mobile devices and networks and as a result the mobile telecommunications industry would co-operate with the Federal Government in responding to the proposal.
The mobile telecommunications industry had not been a specific part of the Government’s ISP filtering trial in the lead up to the Government’s announcement. The mobile industry would look closely at the announcement to assess the technical issues involved.
Mr Althaus said: “Our industry is aware of its responsibility to maintain public trust and confidence in mobile telecommunication services with robust consumer safeguards and standards.
“Our industry takes measures to minimise any risk associated with the misuse of mobile technology. While it is clear that the positive aspects of mobile services far outweigh any negative aspects arising from misuse, we are strongly committed to providing practical advice and taking steps to help prevent misuse and promote the safe and responsible use of mobile telecommunications.
