MobileMuster to present Local Government Awards in Canberra

MobileMuster will present its 4th Annual Local Government Awards at the National General Assembly for Local Government in Canberra next week.

The National General Assembly of Local Government is the largest and most important event on the local government calendar. It is convened by the Australian Local Government Association (ALGA) for local councils across Australia to develop and express a united voice on the core issues affecting local government and their communities. Over 600 councils are expected to be represented at the Assembly

Chris Althaus, CEO of AMTA will announce the nominees for the Best Promoter, Working With Schools, Top Collector, Top Collection per Capita and National Excellence Awards at the Welcome Reception on Monday 14th June at the National Convetion Centre in Canberra

"The role of local councils in addressing the issue of mobile phone e-waste in Australia is critical. Over the past 12 months, local councils have helped MobileMuster to collect and recycle over 3,276 kilograms of mobile phones and accessories, including 24,000 handsets and batteries,” says Rose Read Manager Recycling, MobileMuster

According to Ms Read, Local Government Awards entries and participation in the program has grown each year, as more communities become conscious of the role they can play in reducing e-waste.

Councils play an integral role in helping to educate local communities about mobile phone recycling and in providing a free service to manage this waste effectively,” said Ms Read.

The winners of the five awards will be announced the following day by the MInister for Climate Change, Senator Penny Wong.

MobileMuster will also be announcing details of its E-waste Collection Grants for Local Government during the Assembly.

AMTA is committed to the development of an integrated residential e-waste collection service that is funded by industry, accepts all types of electronic waste and is free to all Australians.

To help develop and trial integrated residential e-waste collections, MobileMuster will be providing a limited number of E-waste Collection Grants to Local Councils of up to $5,000.

In addition MobileMuster will pay each local council or their e-waste collection service provider $2.20 per kilogram of mobile phone components collected through this new method.

By providing these funds MobileMuster will be helping councils promote and streamline e-waste collection services in partnership with the electronics industry, the first step towards integrated residential e-waste collections.

Full details of the nominee, award winners and e-waste collection grants will be available on Tuesday 15 June at www.mobilemuster.com.au.
