Smartphones are now making hotel stays more enjoyable and easier

A new technology has been developed that will allow travellers to by-pass the check-in desks and unlock their hotel rooms themselves by using their mobile phones, says News.com this week.

The mobile check-in process, which is already being used in Australia by airlines such as Virgin Blue, Jetstar and Qantas, will let guests skip the front counter and open their hotel door themselves.

InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG) has announced it will begin testing the new technology at two US Holiday Inns next month.

Those wishing to take part in the trial will need to download an application to their phone, call the confirmation email on their phone and hold it up to a sensor on the door to unlock it.

The technology works by sending an encrypted, unique audio code to the guest's phone.

It will initially be used with smartphones but is designed to work with any mobile phone device in a bid to make the check-in process smoother.

"The proliferation of smartphones is growing in such a way that we have to look at what people are already bringing with them to make their stay more enjoyable," News.com.au quoted IHG executive Bryson Koehler as saying.

The technology could result in saving for hotels due to the reduced need to staff the front desk.

It will be trialled for at least 60-90 days at Holiday Inn Chicago O' Hare Rosemont and the Holiday Inn Express Houston Downtown Convention Centre, US.
