The mobile telecommunications industry has been working with government agencies to improve processes for the collection of accurate identification information of the purchasers of prepaid mobile phone services. The information is primarily required to support investigations by law enforcement agencies and national security agencies.
AMTA Policy Manager said there is an increasing emphasis on national security matters and the industry is playing its part to comply with mandatory regulations about the capture of identification details.
“In order to improve the information collection process for prepaid mobile phone services, the industry has developed a generic prepaid mobile phone services identification check form. The new form will assist retailers by providing a common form and process to be used for all AMTA members, simplifying the current practice of separate forms for each service provider,” she said.
“This will also enable retailers to train their staff more effectively on the use of only one form. The proposed timeframe for the rollout of the new form is July/August 2008.”
Retailers have been informed of the new form and AMTA is seeking their assistance in its rollout. Sales representatives with Carriage Service Providers will liaise with retailers to ensure the introduction of the new form and the processes go as smoothly as possible.
