The 2008 Telco Charity Sailing Challenge is being held to have a fun day on Sydney Harbour on November 27 and to raise awareness and funds for two prominent charities in support of our youth.
The industry’s fundraising efforts will go towards helping The Alannah and Madeline Foundation, in support of their Cybersmart Campaign, working with schools and parents to educate children about safe and smart online behaviour. The second beneficiary is The Salvation Army's Oasis Youth Support Network, Sydney.
AMTA Chief Executive Officer, Chris Althaus, said the exciting news is John Bertrand's participation in the challenge. For those needing a refresher, John Bertrand skippered Australia II to victory in the America’s Cup, breaking 132 years of American domination and as a result broke the longest-running record in modern sports history. John is a World Champion, Olympic medallist, businessman and philanthropist and has committed his time and effort to help promote this event.
“Our race is being managed and conducted by the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia (CYCA) at Rushcutters Bay. We will make the most of the club's prestigious harbour location, kicking off with a casual morning tea on the deck and concluding with post race drinks, entertainment and a BBQ,” he said.
“Our aim in 2008 is to have 50 boats racing a scratch start - all sponsored by telecommunications companies and their partners. The Telco Charity Sailing Challenge is sure to provide the perfect outlet for some healthy Telco competition, a few laughs and a few drinks with your industry peers. Boats and crews of various sizes will be available for sponsorship.
More details will be sent closer to the date. But in the meantime be sure to mark the 27th November in your calendar.
