Communications Alliance, the peak industry body for the Australian communications industry, today announced it has finalised the Mobile Premium Services Industry Code for registration by the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA).
The new Code addresses community concerns regarding mobile premium services such as ring tones, games and horoscopes, and imposes strict obligations on carriers and content providers.
It was developed under the auspices of Communications Alliance by a Working Group consisting of consumer representatives, telecommunications carriers and content service providers over the past 12 months. The development process included extensive consultation with external stakeholders including the ACMA, ACCC, TIO, Minister’s Office and Department, and the Privacy Commission.
Communications Alliance CEO Anne Hurley said the new Code will empower consumers to make informed decisions and protect them from rogue operators.
“I am delighted to announce the finalisation of the Mobile Premium Services Industry Code. This Code goes above and beyond the original Terms of Reference and is a great example of the industry’s willingness to implement practical and enforceable solutions to address concerns and deliver additional safeguards to consumers.
“While many of our members are already observing the rules outlined in this Code, once registered by the ACMA the Code will become mandatory and enforceable. This will provide additional reassurance to the many consumers who make use of mobile premium services and will help the industry weed out the rogues who engage in deceptive practices,” Ms Hurley continued.
“This Code is the outcome of a collaborative process that has required a huge investment from all involved. I would like to thank all members of the Working Group for their valuable contributions to the development of the Code,” she said.
Communications Alliance will submit the Mobile Premium Services Industry Code on Thursday, 19 March for registration by the ACMA.
The Code will complement Communications Alliance’s www.19sms.com.au consumer information website which provides a comprehensive guide to mobile premium services. A summary of additional protections which have been introduced in the Code, including points of consent, is also available at this website.
