This paper highlights the development of an evidence base for the promotion of digital media literacy by communications regulators. It presents an overview of current and potential areas for research that reflect the priority within communications policy environments on promoting safe and effective forms of digital participation.
Along with a research listing of relevant data sources for Australian digital media literacy research, it also includes an exploratory discussion that seeks to identify what kinds of competency measures might best capture the qualities of effective participation for the Australian population, which incorporate not only technology access requirements but capability requirements as well.
Digital media literacy in Australia—Key indicators and research sources is an outcome of ACMA's Digital Media Literacy Research Program which commenced in 2007.
