The Faculty of Life and Social Sciences and the Australian Centre for Radiofrequency Bioeffects Research (ACRBR) will host SW08: Wireless and Health "Unplugged and uncertain?" at Swinburne University, Melbourne, on November 12th, 2008, from 5.00 - 9.30pm.
This free public event will help raise public awareness of mobile phone research and answer questions about the alleged health effects of mobile phones and Wi-Fi in schools, home and the workplace. The latest scientific research into telecommunications related health matters will be available, along with scientists and advisors to discuss policy and matters of concern.
Keynote speaker, Prof. Bruce Armstrong, leading Australian epidemiologist, will discuss the upcoming results of the Interphone study, an epidemiological study into possible links between long-term mobile phone use and head and neck cancers.
The Interphone study, co-ordinated by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), an arm of the World Health Organisation, examines results across 13 countries, including Australia, for both personal and occupational exposure to electromagnetic fields emitted by mobile phones.
Prof Armstrong will also be part of the expert panel at the public forum along with several leading Australian scientists, who will be able to answer questions and provide their opinion on matters of radiofrequencies and health.
The ACRBR is offering up to four $500 travel awards for interested members of the public who wish to attend Science & Wireless. These are intended to assist with travel costs for community members involved in the debate about radiofrequency and health.
