Mobile sales hit new heights

Following a record year of sales in 2003, when total handset sales reached almost 6 million, latest figures indicate that 2004 could be even bigger.

Handset sales for March 2004 were 740,717 compared with 425,891 in March 2003.  Latest March figures are the largest monthly sales recorded since AMTA commenced collecting industry statistics in 2002. This represents an increase of  74%.

Sales for the first quarter 2004 were 1,545,836 units. For the same period in 2003 1,046,275 handsets were sold. This represents a 48%  increase.

“The statistics suggest that Australians are replacing their handsets with newer technologies or buying additional ones.” AMTA CEO, Graham Chalker, said.

“Australian mobile users are exceeding global trends where the market for mobile phones expanded by more than 25% in the first quarter this year.”

“Australian users appear to be moving from simple voice phones with black and white screens to more sophisticated devices incorporating colour screens, inbuilt cameras and multimedia capacity.”
