There were 848,727 shipments of mobile phones to Australia in June 2009, according to the latest industry figures.
The shipments in June were up 15% on the previous month. The figures for Q2 of 2009 were up 4% on Q2 2008.
The figures are shipments and not sales figures. Some of the handsets brought to Australia are then transshipped to other countries in the region.
By way of background last month CommSec said AMTA’s mobile phone shipment figures for May 2009 were showing signs of cautious consumer optimism.
CommSec Chief Economist Craig James said the shipment figures were the first key indicator of retail spending for May and confirmed that consumers were maintaining an approach of “cautious optimism”.
According to the industry’s official figures compiled by Informark, mobile phone handset shipments this year have held up well despite tough economic conditions, according to the latest official industry figures.
The results for June are a further signal to the resilience of the mobile market in these challenging economic times.
