One hundred thousand native trees will be planted as part of MobileMuster’s recent Old Phones More Trees campaign. This is a 40% increase on last year’s campaign.
MobileMuster and Landcare Australia will plant up to 100,000 native trees for every mobile phone handset handed in for the month to June.
AMTA Recycling Manager, Rose Read, said about 105,000 handsets were received during the campaign, which ran from 2 May to World Environment Day on the 5 June 2008. NSW and Victoria contributed the most mobile phones, handing in 34,000 and 30,000 phones for recycling.
“This is nearly a 40% increase on last year’s Old Phones New Trees campaign when 75,000 handsets were collected resulting in 75,000 trees being planted across Australia,” she said.
Mobilemuster also received 4.4 tonnes of batteries and 12 tonnes of accessories for recycling together with the handsets.
Landcare Australia and Mobilemuster will now work out where the additional 100,000 trees will be planted over the next 12months. Details of individual sites will be announced later this year.
