Strong mobile phone shipments in September have brought total shipments to Australia so far this year to within one per cent of last year’s performance, which resulted in a record of more than 9 million shipments for 2007, according to the latest official industry figures.

According to the Informark shipment figures for September ’08, there were 798,383 shipments of mobile phones to Australia – up 75% on the previous month’s figure.

The cumulative total shipments for the nine calendar months of this year were 6.02 million compared to 6.09 million for the corresponding period in 2007. Last year, there were a record 9.28 million shipments in the 12 months to December ’07.

Traditionally, October and November are the biggest shipment months as the industry gears up for sales for the Christmas season.
