The Government announced on Wednesday 12 November that it had passed the Trade Practices Amendment (Clarity in Pricing) Bill 2008 that “will increase pricing transparency so consumers will know the total price they are required to pay for a good or service”.

Welcoming the Bill, Chris Bowen MP, Assistant Treasurer and Minister for Competition Policy & Consumer Affairs, said that “the Clarity in Pricing legislation will see an end to the practice of certain retailers who relegate compulsory charges or taxes to the fine print and mislead the consumer on the total price of a product”.

AMTA has made a number of representations to the government about the proposed Bill since the original draft was released for public comment back in 2006. AMTA is pleased that the Government was able to address industry concerns about the workability of the proposed Bill, and welcomes the final Clarity in Pricing Bill 2008.
