What impact will the credit crunch have on the mobile sector’s prospects to 2013?

Ovum reports in its new Global Market Outlook for 2008-2013 that mobile telecommunications is relatively resilient to the global financial problems with emerging markets driving global connections and revenue growth.

Data is finally taking off in mature markets and doesn’t look like stopping.

Ovum reports in its new Global Market Outlook for 2008-2013 that mobile telecommunications is relatively resilient to the global financial problems with emerging markets driving global connections and revenue growth.

Ovum says in the present financial situation it becomes increasingly important to understand current and future business opportunities.

For the mobile industry, this is increasingly difficult due to a rapidly changing market environment. Technology, regulation and new competitors are changing the landscape in which mobile operators have to compete. Yet, as this report identifies, this change offers excellent growth opportunities over the next five years, as long as operators are willing and able to adapt.

Key findings:

  • Mobile is relatively resilient to macroeconomic factors. Emerging markets will drive global connections and revenue growth. Data is finally taking off in mature markets and doesn’t look like stopping.

  • Voice is the revenue generating mobile application. Voice will remain the main revenue generator, accounting for 73% of global mobile revenues in 2013.

  • Access is essential for data. Operators will make more money from data access than premium content during the next five years.

  • Global players want more of the market, but new players are entering the world stage. During the next five years, the main consolidators will continue to be the established global players, but they will be joined by several expansionist operators that threaten to disrupt the global status quo.
