EME explained in UN agency’s new app

The ITU is the UN agency responsible for telecommunitcations.

The International Telecommunication Union (ITU), the UN agency for telecommunications, has launched EMF Guide, a new mobile and web app to explain electromagnetic energy that has raised public health concerns.

“The launch of this new mobile app will be effective in increasing public understanding of EMF [electromagnetic fields], and help address citizens’ concerns,” said ITU Secretary-General Hamadoun I. Touré.
The guide offers a plain language explanation of the science surrounding of electromagnetic energy and covers topics such as EMF and health, mobile phones and specific absorption rate (a measurement of radio frequency energy absorbed by tissues), exposure guidelines and standards. There are also answers to frequently asked questions, additional ITU and external EMF related information, as well as a bibliography with links to similar organisations.
“The application of technical best practices and standards to safeguard public health must be matched by communication with the public to increase the transparency of regulators and operators’ actions in this domain,” said ITU Secretary-General Hamadoun I. Touré in a message.
The app was launched at the ITU forum on human exposure to EMF in Kochi India in December, and was well received at the event.
