Health & Safety

Health and safety of mobile telecommunications.

The Australian Mobile Telecommunications Association (AMTA), on behalf of its member companies, promotes the safe and responsible use of mobile telecommunications.

The two broad areas of health and safety aspects of mobile telecommunications are:

  • the responsible use of legal hands-free mobile phones when driving; and
  • compliance with strict, science-based safety standards for electromagnetic energy (EME) from mobile handsets and base stations.

This site is designed to offer a range of information, including practical consumer advice, on health and safety factors of mobile telecommunications. Visit our "Keep your eyes on the road" website for information specific to mobile phone use while driving.

AMTA relies on the advice of independent scientific experts, such as the World Health Organisation (WHO), to give consumers accurate information to assist them in making informed choices about mobile technology and health.

The mobile phone industry takes all questions about the safety of mobile phones seriously and has a strong commitment to supporting ongoing scientific research on health and safety issues.
